Tokyo confirmed 711 novel coronavirus infections on April 20, 201 more than on the previous Tuesday, metropolitan government health officials said.
The last time the number exceeded 700 on a Tuesday was on Jan. 26, when 1,026 infections were confirmed.
The daily average of new cases over the week through April 20 was 629.3, an increase of 27.9 percent from the week before.
The number of serious COVID-19 cases requiring ventilators or an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) device, which circulates blood through an artificial lung, stood at 50 on April 20, three more than the previous day.
