Tokyo reported 106 new COVID-19 infections on July 7, the sixth consecutive day of topping the 100 mark, according to metropolitan health officials.
On July 1, 67 new cases were reported in the capital, but the number jumped to 107 the following day. The daily count continued to top 100 in the ensuing days, with July 4 marking the highest of the week at 131.
The latest 106 cases brought the seven-day average in Tokyo to 106.9.
Noting the spike in new cases, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike on July 4 urged residents not to travel to other prefectures for any unessential outing or trip.
On July 6, a day after winning re-election, Koike pledged to fulfill her campaign promise of creating a "hub" in Tokyo based on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
