KAGOSHIMA--The prefectural government has asked bars and clubs that provide “companionship” to suspend operations after infection cluster of COVID-19 hit an entertainment establishment in Kagoshima city.

The request for shutdowns from July 8 to 21 is targeted at cabaret, night clubs, dance halls, and hostess and host bars.

At least eight of the 12 newly confirmed infection cases in the prefecture on June 6 came from the New Odama Lee Danshaku “show pub” in the Tenmonkan entertainment area of the city, local government officials said.

In fact, 89 of the prefecture’s 110 total cases can be traced to New Odama Lee Danshaku, city officials said.

The venue is known for its high-quality dances and has been attracting many customers from within and outside of the prefecture.

The prefectural government will provide 200,000 yen ($1,862) for mid-size and small companies for their cooperation to temporarily close down.

It will also give 100,000 yen to cooperating solopreneurs. Those individuals and businesses can receive an additional 100,000 yen if they operate multiple bars and restaurants.

On May 15, the Kagoshima prefectural government lifted its request for companionship establishments to close down.
