Tokyo reported 111 newly confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus on July 5, the fourth consecutive day the total has surpassed 100, metropolitan officials said.

The count follows Governor Yuriko Koike's plea to residents on July 4 to avoid nonessential trips out of the capital to other prefectures due to a recent uptick in infections. The confirmed new cases hit 131 that day, the highest since the state of emergency was lifted for Tokyo in late May.
