Tokyo reported 22 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 on June 11, with the daily tally topping 20 for the first time in five days, health officials and other sources said.
With the latest count factored in, the cumulative toll came to 5,448 in the capital.
The last time new infections surpassed the 20 mark was on June 6, when Tokyo logged 26 cases.
The metropolitan government issued a “Tokyo alert” to heighten precautions against a possible resurgence in the new coronavirus about a week after the capital was moved out of the state of emergency.
Metropolitan officials are expected to weigh if they can withdraw the alert on the evening of June 11, as Tokyo planned to ease restrictions on businesses in stages.
