Tokyoites continued to bake in the intense heat as the thermometer once again soared above 35 degrees in central Tokyo on Aug. 27.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the temperature hit 35.3 degrees at 10:42 a.m., marking the 10th consecutive day since Aug. 18 that it has exceeded 35 degrees.
This surpasses the nine-day streak from June 25 to July 3, 2022, setting a new record for the longest duration.
The number of intense heat days in the year, defined as exceeding 35 degrees, also reached 23, surpassing the previous mark of 22 set in 2023.
According to the JMA, a high-pressure system is covering a wide area of the Japanese archipelago, allowing strong sunlight to easily reach the ground.
Temperatures in central Tokyo have remained high, hitting 37 degrees on Aug. 18 and 37.3 degrees on Aug. 24.
