Cherry blossom trees in central Tokyo are now in full bloom, one day earlier than normal and five days earlier than last year, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
It said a JMA staff member visually confirmed this fact by checking a sample tree at Yasukuni Shrine in Chiyoda Ward.
Officials noted that the city center had been experiencing a series of warm days in the latter half of the month with maximum temperatures of 25 degrees or higher.
But on March 29, the mercury plummeted by about 10 degrees from the previous day, bringing bitterly cold weather.
The cherry blossoms were at their best at Gotanda Fureai Mizuibe Hiroba park along Megurogawa river in the city’s Shinagawa Ward, which was crowded with visitors.
