The Japanese government has allowed an injured Palestinian woman from Gaza to receive medical treatment in Tokyo for the first time since the conflict between Hamas and Israel broke out in October 2023.
The Foreign Ministry on March 26 also announced that a second Palestinian woman is expected to arrive soon for treatment at the Self-Defense Forces Central Hospital in the capital.
Both women were previously hospitalized in Egypt.
The move comes in response to requests from the World Health Organization and the actions of some Group of Seven member nations to provide medical treatment to injured Gazans.
Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said in a Diet session in February that he was “working diligently” to arrange medical treatment for Palestinians in Japan.
However, this does not indicate broader acceptance of Palestinian refugees.
Officials stated that they will not offer permanent residency to the two women, who will return to Gaza after their recovery.
The government has also provided treatment in Japan for injured Ukrainian soldiers following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
