MIYAZAKI—A university here will reinstate an assistant professor, retracting its decision to dismiss her over her marriage with a colleague, according to a settlement.
Her husband can also continue to work as a professor at Miyazaki Sangyo-keiei University’s Faculty of Law in fiscal 2025, lawyers for the couple said March 21.
The couple registered their marriage in July.
According to the plaintiffs’ lawyers, the university said it would terminate its contract with the wife at the end of fiscal 2024, which ends on March 31, when the husband reported their marriage to the university president.
In a disciplinary measure dated Feb. 26 this year, the wife was demoted to a clerical staff position and the husband to an associate professor.
According to the settlement reached at the Miyazaki District Court on March 21, the university has retracted the punitive measure for the couple.
The wife will continue to work as an assistant professor in the faculty of law in fiscal 2025 and the husband as a professor in the same department.
Miyazaki Sangyo-keiei University, the only university with a department of law in Miyazaki Prefecture, also pledged to create a favorable working environment for female faculty members, the lawyers said.
