NAGOYA--Passengers in a Tokaido Shinkansen car bound for Shin-Osaka from Tokyo on March 15 were moved to another car after a cracked window was found that apparently resulted from a falling steel plate.
According to Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai), a passenger reported the crack in the window glass of the No. 16 car of the Nozomi No. 317 running in Aichi Prefecture at around 10:30 a.m.
About 60 passengers in the car were moved to another car as a precaution, and the bullet train continued to run at a reduced speed for a while. No injuries were reported.
JR Tokai conducted an equipment inspection and found that a lid covering signal and communication cables in the Sakanosaka Tunnel between Toyohashi and Mikawa-Anjo stations had fallen off.
The cover is a steel plate about 30 centimeters long, 40-60 cm wide, 3 millimeters thick, and weighing about 4 kilograms.
The company is investigating the cause of the accident, believing that the plate fell and hit the window glass.
Maintenance work related to communication equipment was conducted in the tunnel from March 12 to the morning of March 13. The tightness of the lid was checked, but no abnormality was found.
