MORIOKA—A skier, believed to be an American man, died after being buried in snow at a ski resort in Iwate Prefecture, police said.
Two fellow skiers reported the man missing by calling police from a mountain at the Geto Kogen Resort in the southwestern city of Kitakami around 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 18.
At the time, snow was falling and strong winds were blowing.
Rescue workers found the man buried in the snow off-piste about four hours later.
He was in cardiac and respiratory arrest and was confirmed dead after being taken to a hospital in the city.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident, including whether an avalanche had occurred.
The three individuals were skiing in a forested area outside the main ski runs, the resort said.
They were among a group of nine people visiting the resort, police said.
