Weather officials are warning of heavy snow mainly on the Sea of Japan side from northern to western Japan through Feb. 19, urging residents to remain on the alert for transportation disruptions and avalanches.
A developing low-pressure system is moving eastward from the Sea of Japan, strengthening the winter weather pattern and resulting in worsening conditions over a wide area.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, snowfall over the 24-hour period through 6 p.m. on Feb. 17 is expected to reach up to 30 centimeters in the Hokuriku region, 25 cm in the Tokai region and 20 cm in the Tohoku and Kanto-Koshin regions.
For the following 24-hour period through 6 p.m. on Feb. 18, snowfall is forecast to total up to 70 cm in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions and 50 cm in the Kanto-Koshin and Tokai regions.
Over the next 24 hours through 6 p.m. on Feb. 19, forecasters predict up to 70 cm in the Hokuriku region and 50 cm in the Tohoku, Kanto-Koshin and Tokai regions.
As of 5 p.m. on Feb. 16, snow accumulation had reached 429 cm in Aomori city, 272 cm in Uonuma, Niigata Prefecture, and 265 cm in Nishikawa, Yamagata Prefecture, exceeding seasonal averages.
