Ground subsidence in Gifu Prefecture was likely caused by tunnel construction work for the magnetic-levitation (maglev) Chuo Shinkansen Line, Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) said.
In the Okute district of Mizunami city, where the ground subsidence occurred, a drop in water level was also reported in multiple locations, including wells and reservoirs, since February 2024.
The subsidence last August has involved a maximum drop of 7.7 centimeters.
JR Tokai was trying to determine if the land subsidence is linked to the nearby tunnel construction.
The company said it had received around 10 inquiries about the impact of land subsidence on local homes.
JR will consider compensation for houses affected by ground subsidence.
JR Tokai originally planed to open the Shinagawa-Nagoya stretch in 2027. But tunnel construction delays moved the date to no earlier than 2034.
