KASHIMA, Ibaraki Prefecture--A fishing vessel capsized off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture early on Jan. 6, killing two crew members and leaving three others missing, according to the Japan Coast Guard.
Fifteen individuals were rescued from the chilly waters.
Authorities received an emergency call at 2:10 a.m. from a nearby vessel that a seine boat had overturned about 30 kilometers east of Kashima Port.
Of the 20 crew members on board, 15 were Japanese and five were Indonesian.
The two fatalities were Japanese men in their 50s and 60s.
A search operation is continuing for three missing Japanese men in their 40s, 60s and 70s.
The 80-ton purse seiner Daihachi Ohama Maru had been hauling in a large amount of fish when it began to tilt and eventually overturned, according to a rescued crew member.
The vessel departed from its home port of Otsu in Kita-Ibaraki the previous day. It was operating alongside two other boats at the time of the accident.
