Osamu Suzuki, the former president and chairman of Suzuki Motor Corp., has died, the automaker said on Dec. 27. He was 94.
Suzuki entered what is now Suzuki Motor in 1958 and became the company president in 1978. He transformed the company into an automaker known for its economical minicars.
He also recognized the potential of the Indian market early on, setting up local production bases there in 1983. At one time, Suzuki Motor produced about half of the passenger cars in the Indian market, making the company more famous in India than in Japan.
Suzuki stepped down as company president in June 2000 and became chairman. However, he returned to hold both posts concurrently in December 2008 after the previous president resigned for health reasons.
He turned over the president’s post to his son, Toshihiro, in June 2015.
