Toho Co. announced record profits due to the success of several blockbuster animated films and increased merchandise sales in its August 2024 mid-term business results released on Oct. 15.
The company’s operating revenue, or net sales, rose 17.2 percent from the previous year to 163.6 billion yen ($1.1 billion).
Toho's operating income, which represents the company’s profits from its core business, increased 33 percent to 40.9 billion yen, while its net income rose 21.8 percent to 26.4 billion yen—all record highs.
Of the company’s films, “Detective Conan: The Million Dollar Pentagram,” which was released in April, grossed 15.7 billion yen.
“Haikyu!!: The Dumpster Battle,” which was released in February, grossed 11.5 billion yen.
“My Hero Academia: You’re Next” grossed 3.4 billion yen after its release in August.
“Kingdom: Return of the Great General,” a live-action adaptation of a popular manga series, was also a hit. It was released in July and grossed 7.8 billion yen.
Toho’s operating income in the film business increased approximately 1.5 times from that of the same period last year.
In particular, the operating income of the video business branch (which handles the video distribution of animated films, merchandising rights and merchandise sales) more than doubled.
Toho also revised its earnings forecast for the fiscal year ending February 2025, raising its anticipated operating income from 55 billion yen to a record high of 62 billion yen.
