MATSUYAMA--To attract pop culture fans from home and abroad, the city government has opened a website to introduce the real-life locales of their favorite settings here that are featured in works of fiction.
Also aimed at promoting the charms of the city, which is the capital of Ehime Prefecture, the Matsuyama Sacred Place Tour website presents a total of 25 locations from anime, movies, TV dramas and novels as "holy sites."
They include Baishinji Station from the "Tokyo Love Story" TV drama series and the Dogo Onsen Honkan, the main bathhouse of a famous hot spring resort here associated with Ryotaro Shiba's novel "Saka no Ue no Kumo" ("Clouds above the Hill") and its TV drama series adaptation.
Each site is introduced with a map, commentaries both in Japanese and English and photos.
The website was launched ahead of the release of "Give It All." The animated feature film is based on a coming-of-age novel about high school girls in Matsuyama who are members of a rowing club.
"We'd be happy if many people learn about Matsuyama through their favorite anime, TV dramas, movies and other works, visit the city and become fans," said Tsukasa Inoue, a senior official at the municipal government's promotion division.
