YAMANASHI, Yamanashi Prefecture—The harvest season for the Shine Muscat grape began here earlier than usual because scorching temperatures since spring have accelerated the growth of the fruit.

On Sept. 6, employees at a farm in Yamanashi were seen picking the grapes and carefully separating them based on slight differences in their color.

Yamanashi produces the most grapes of all prefectures in Japan.

The amount of Shine Muscat grapes shipped in Yamanashi Prefecture last year was the highest of any grape variety, according to the Yamanashi prefectural branch of the National Federation of Agricultural Co-operative Associations.

Since overtaking Kyoho grape shipments in 2020, the volume of Shine Muscat grapes has been increasing year on year, the association said.

Grape picking is expected to continue throughout September in the prefecture as harvest work moves from one production area to the next.
