Katsu Tsunoda, senior managing director of The Asahi Shimbun Co., will be promoted to president and chief executive officer, while Shiro Nakamura, the current president, will become chairman, the company announced April 25.

The changes will be officially decided at an extraordinary meeting of the board of directors following approval at a general shareholders meeting scheduled on June 25.

Tsunoda, 59, who was appointed to senior managing director in June last year, has spearheaded reforms of content generation as chief content and digital policy officer.

He will oversee the execution of the company’s operations after assuming the president's post and will be responsible for transforming its business structure and reinforcing its growth potential.

Nakamura, 61, who has served as president since April 2021, will be in charge of managing the overall operations of the Asahi Shimbun group in his new position as chairman.

He will also tackle issues facing the media industry as president of the Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association (Nihon Shinbun Kyokai), the post he has held since June last year.
