Five deaths suspected to be related to the use of Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co.’s supplements included three people in their 70s, one in his or her 90s, and one of an unknown age, the health ministry announced on April 9.

The five deaths reported by the Osaka-based pharmaceutical company to the health ministry were two males and three females.

Three of the five had a history of prostate cancer, malignant lymphoma, hypertension, hyperlipidemia or rheumatism.

According to a survey by the Japanese Society of Nephrology, 95 cases of health problems caused by the use of the company’s supplements containing the malted rice ingredient benikoji were reported by April 4, with the majority involving people in their 40s and 50s.

The periods in which they complained of feeling ill and went to see a doctor primarily fell between December 2023 and March 2024.

While most of the complainants had been using the supplements for several months or more, some went to see a doctor in the month they started using them.
