OGUNI, Kumamoto Prefecture—About 3,000 “koinobori” carp-shaped streamers are casting out festive spring colors over the Tsuetate Onsen hot spring resort area.
The koinobori streamers are displayed along about 800 meters of both banks of the Tsuetategawa river and are illuminated at night between 7 and 10 p.m.
Local residents and high school volunteers hooked the streamers onto ropes above the riverbanks.
The koinobori festival runs until May 6.
According to local tourism association officials, this is the 44th year the koinobori festival has been held.
