SHIMONOSEKI, Yamaguchi Prefecture--Eight crew members were killed and two remain missing after a South Korean-flagged chemical tanker capsized in western Japan early on March 20.
The 870-ton Keoyong Sun sent a distress call at 7:05 a.m., saying “the ship is tilting.”
The tanker was anchored 8 kilometers north-northwest off Mutsurejima island in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
The Japan Coast Guard dispatched four patrol vessels and two aircraft.
According to the Coast Guard, nine of the 11 crew members, including Indonesians, were retrieved from the water by helicopter. Eight were confirmed dead, and one was alive.
The Coast Guard will continue its rescue operations for the remaining two throughout the night.
