Cartoonist Moto Hagio was given a special honorary award at France’s Angouleme International Comics Festival, one of the largest of its kind in Europe, publisher Shogakukan Inc. announced.
The 74-year-old manga author is best known for her works including “The Poe Clan” and “A Cruel God Reigns.”
“After I encountered manga, my life became enriched, beautiful and generous,” Hagio said in her comment released on Jan. 27 after the award was announced at the festival.
She continued, “I appreciate that this field of expression exists and that I have the support of many people, including readers and editors. Thank you so much.”
Other Japanese creators, including Yoshiharu Tsuge and Ryoichi Ikegami, have also received this award in previous years.
