Years after its planned launch date, a new commercial complex featuring restaurants and a hot spring will open next to Tokyo’s Toyosu fish market on Feb. 1.
Ahead of its official opening, Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai hosted a preview event on Jan. 29 for the media and select guests.
Located on a roughly 11,000-square-meter site in the capital’s Koto Ward, the facility consists of two buildings.
Toyosu Edo-mae Market, a three-story building re-creating Edo-era streets, features 65 restaurants and other shops.
The nine-story spa facility, Tokyo Toyosu Manyo Club, features baths, saunas, a hotel and a free foot bath on its eighth floor with stunning waterfront views.
Together, the two buildings are expected to draw 2.6 million annual visitors.
Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai, a project initiated by the Tokyo metropolitan government, was initially planned to open in 2018 along with the fish market, which was relocated from the Tsukiji district in Chuo Ward about 2 kilometers away.
However, the schedule was repeatedly pushed back due to various hurdles, including disagreements between the facility operators and the metropolitan government.
