Snowfall is forecast for the Kanto-Koshin region in some areas on Jan. 20 and 21, including a heavy snow warning for the Tama district of western Tokyo.
If temperatures drop below the current forecast, snow may also fall in the 23 wards of Tokyo, and caution is advised to avoid traffic disruptions and icy road conditions.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a low-pressure front is expected to develop off the southern coast of Honshu and then pass eastward near the Izu island chain.
As a result, rain and snow will likely begin to fall from the afternoon on Jan. 20 and heavy snow is possible mainly along mountainous areas until the next day.
In the 24 hours until 6 a.m. on Jan. 21, up to 40 centimeters of snow is expected to fall in the mountains of northern Kanto, Nagano and Yamanashi prefectures, and 20 cm in the plains of northern Kanto, the Tama district and elsewhere.
