Japan Coast Guard staff stationed at Haneda Airport in Tokyo will be suspended from flight operations due to psychological trauma from the fatal collision between a Japan Airlines passenger jet and a Coast Guard aircraft.
"Operations conducted in a state of anxiety could lead to mistakes,” a Coast Guard official said. “We need an urgent assessment of the staff’s mental health.”
About 110 staff members, including pilots and mechanics stationed at the 3rd Regional Coast Guard Headquarters' Haneda Air Station, will soon undergo physical checkups and mental evaluations.
Some have expressed anxiety or were unable to report for work following the Jan. 2 runway accident at the airport, which killed five of the six crew members aboard the Coast Guard aircraft preparing to take off.
At the time of the accident, the Coast Guard was deploying four airplanes and two helicopters at its Haneda base.
