A 39-year-old man who pushed a complete stranger off a station platform in Tokyo into the path of an oncoming train was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
The victim, a woman in her 60s, suffered life-threatening injuries from the Jan. 6 incident in Minato Ward.
The perpetrator, who is from Osaka Prefecture, admitted trying to kill the woman, telling investigators he wanted to spend the rest of his life in prison.
Officials of the Metropolitan Police Department withheld the man’s name.
The woman was at the front of the line waiting for her train when she was pushed from behind around 1:30 p.m., police said.
It was unclear if the woman was hit by the train, which was coming into the station.
She suffered a traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage, but is conscious and expected to survive.
Police said the suspect is from Tondabayashi city, Osaka Prefecture, but did not establish his occupation.
“I did it because I want to stay behind bars until I die,” police quoted the man as saying.
After the incident, several 110 emergency calls were made to the police. A member of the public subdued the man and handed him over to police.
According to East Japan Railway Co., the accident occurred on platform 6 of the Tokaido Line at Shinagawa Station. Door barriers are not installed on the platform.
The train was delayed for about an hour due to the incident.
