A widespread network outage early on Dec. 11 was restored after about three hours, telecom giant KDDI Corp. said the same day.

Mobile phone users in western Japan and other parts of the country were left struggling to make calls or access the internet from around 7:20 a.m.

Emergency calls, including those for police and fire, were also impacted.

“We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience caused to our customers,” said KDDI, which is investigating the cause of the glitch.

Along with those who use KDDI’s au, UQ mobile and povo services, customers of budget mobile phone service providers using KDDI’s network were also affected.

In July last year, a nationwide outage of KDDI’s network affected more than 30.91 million customers for about 61 hours.

In addition to services for private phone users, the glitch disrupted the operations of ATMs placed outside bank branches, cars connected to its services and parcel-tracking services.

The telecommunications ministry issued a warning to KDDI, calling the 2022 outage a “serious accident” under the Telecommunications Business Law.
