The Imperial Palace grounds in Tokyo opened to the public Nov. 25 so visitors can enjoy the changing autumn foliage.
Visitors were restricted to an area called Inui-dori Avenue, which runs north-south through the moated site.
The Imperial Household Agency said 11,370 people visited on the first day.
The avenue is open to the public until Dec. 3.
Unlike last year, the wearing of face masks was left to the discretion of individuals.
Seventy momiji Japanese maple trees line the 750-meter-long street.
Admission is free.
The grounds are open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors must leave by 3:30 p.m.
