SAGA--The first case this season of an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza at a chicken farm was reported by the Saga prefectural government on Nov. 25.
Prefectural government officials said the avian influenza was confirmed at a chicken farm in Kashima and that culling of about 40,000 birds had begun.
Farm operators informed prefectural government officials the previous day of a spike in the number of chickens dying.
Genetic analysis confirmed the avian influenza and the farm ministry said it was highly likely an epidemic had struck.
The case was the fourth in Saga Prefecture since last year.
