Part of Tokyo’s Yamanote Line will be suspended between Osaki and Ikebukuro stations on Nov. 18 and 19 due to scheduled work at Shibuya Station, which is between the two stations.
East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) announced that no train will be running on the loopline’s clockwise track, or the outer loop, in that section on Nov. 18.
In addition, operations will be reduced by around 30 percent on the counter-clockwise track, or the inner loop.
This means passengers can travel from Ikebukuro Station to Osaki Station through Shibuya Station on Nov. 18 but not vice versa.
The arrangement will switch the following day, with all counter-clockwise trains being canceled and trains running in the opposite direction being available at a reduced frequency on Nov. 19.
Operations on the remaining section of the Yamanote Line between Ikebukuro and Osaki stations sandwiching Tokyo Station will also be reduced by 60 to 70 percent on both days.
JR East advises passengers to use the Tokyo Metro and other alternative lines for their travels in the affected area.
An estimated 640,000 passengers will be affected over the weekend due to the work, which will elevate the platforms and tracks to make way for a new concourse at one of the busiest stations in the capital.
