A swimmer in his 60s was left with broken ribs July 16 after a dolphin rammed him in shallow waters at a beach in Fukui Prefecture.
An eyewitness alerted police around 4:10 a.m. to report the attack at Suishohama beach in Mihama.
The man, who is from Kani in Gifu Prefecture, was swimming 5 meters offshore with a friend when the dolphin lunged, according to the Tsuruga Police Station.
The swimmer sustained three or four broken ribs and bites to his hands.
That same morning, a man in his 40s was also bitten by a dolphin on his left arm.
The beach is visited is popular with visitors from inside and outside the prefecture in summer.
Police said they had already received six reports of dolphin attacks this season alone.
Authorities urged people to stay away from the dolphins for their own safety.
“If you see them, don’t go into the water,” an official said.
