Heavy rainfall battered western Japan on July 8, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency to caution against landslides with a forecast of more rain on July 9 due to a stalled front.
Matsue, the capital of Shimane Prefecture, recorded 193 millimeters of rain for the 24-hour period until 3:20 p.m. on July 8. Murakami in Niigata Prefecture had 131 mm.
For the 24-hour period until 6 a.m. on July 9, the JMA was forecasting as much as 250 mm in northern Kyushu; 180 mm for the Tokai and Chugoku regions; 150 mm for the Kanto-Koshin and Hokuriku regions; and 120 mm for the Tohoku region.
Linear rainbands formed over Shimane Prefecture on July 8 and the municipal governments of Matsue and Izumo issued evacuation instructions for around 370,000 residents.
