Tsuda University in the western Tokyo city of Kodaira has become the latest women’s university in Japan to announce plans to accept transgender students.

The university said on June 23 that it will admit students who are listed as male on family registers but identify themselves as female from fiscal 2025 at undergraduate and graduate courses.

A committee of faculty and staff members will confirm the gender identity of transgender applicants, according to university officials and guidelines.

It will also provide information about the university during interviews so that they will not have major problems with their campus lives.

The university will set up a point of contact where transgender and other students can receive advice.

It will also carry out activities for deepening understanding of sexual minorities, targeting students and faculty and staff members.

Among women’s universities in Japan, Ochanomizu University began accepting transgender students from fiscal 2020.

It was followed by Nara Women’s University, Miyagi Gakuin Women’s University and Notre Dame Seishin University.

Japan Women’s University will accept them from fiscal 2024.
