YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia--Dressed in the country's traditional Batik garment, Emperor Naruhito toured the Borobudur Temple Compounds here in the city's suburbs on June 22 as part of his official visit to Indonesia.

Naruhito explored the iconic Buddhist temple that dates from the eighth to ninth centuries.

“I sincerely hope this amazing temple will be preserved for many years to come,” Naruhito said as he walked around the site in a pair of special sandals for visitors designed to prevent damage to the ancient stone structure.

The UNESCO World Heritage site features around 500 Buddha statues and walls decorated with reliefs that express the religion’s teachings.

Since 2022, authorities have limited daily visitors to the temple complex to 1,200 to protect the structures from overtourism.
