RAUSU, Hokkaido--Whale watchers were excited to see a pod of about 15 orcas splashing in waters off Hokkaido on June 2.
“Their strong family bond shows in the way they swim closely together,” said Fumio Samizo from Osaka Prefecture.
The killer whales displayed playful behavior such as swimming on their sides and upside down.
The marine mammals can be observed in waters here from May to August, but tourists have the best chance to encounter them in June.
The largest males can measure up to eight meters in length.
