Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike is vowing to seek compensation from any companies that rigged bids for pre-events of the Olympic and Paralympic Games hosted by the capital in 2021.
Speaking to the metropolitan assembly on Feb. 21, Koike said she will urge the organizing committee to file a claim for damages against the advertising giant Dentsu Inc. and other companies suspected of bid rigging over the contracts for related Games events and merchandise.
Although the Tokyo metropolitan government has not directly signed deals with the companies, it would intervene as the partner that co-hosted the events with the organizer.
Koike is demanding that the organizing committee, which is currently going through liquidation, take the necessary actions against the companies if the Fair Trade Commission determines they were involved in bid rigging.
The Tokyo metropolitan government will also demand compensation from the organizer if it is revealed that the host city paid more than it had to due to the bid rigging pushing up costs, she added.
The organizing committee was scheduled for dissolution in March, but that will now be pushed back due to the scandal.
