NARITA, Chiba Prefecture--Authorities began removing structures and obstacles on a plot of farmland within Narita Airport after police quashed an anti-eviction rally that drew 100 protesters on Feb. 15.
“This is where I was born. This land is part of myself,” said Takao Shito, 72, who was working the land.
“I can’t stand the arrogant behavior of the airport operators, especially the way they bought the land from its original owner without telling my father so they can kick us out,” he added.
Authorities began removing a barn and polytunnels, as well as signboards and a tower the protesters built on the 4,600 square-meter plot next to a taxiway at the airport.
The Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Narita International Airport Corp. and ordered the farmer to leave.
Shito doesn’t own the land, but his family has farmed the property since his grandfather’s generation leased it.
