YAMAGA, Kumamoto Prefecture--Hundreds of traditional Japanese umbrellas and thousands of bamboo lanterns are warming the atmosphere of the cold winter nights here.
The festival, called “Yamaga Toro Roman Hyakka Hyakusai,” is being held around “Yachiyo-za,” a traditional playhouse in the city designated as a national important cultural property.
The event had been canceled for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic but has returned this year.
About 5,000 tubes of bamboo containing candles and 300 illuminated Japanese umbrellas are adorning the streets.
The event is being held every Friday and Saturday until Feb. 25 from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
