Daishiro Yamagiwa, state minister in charge of economic revitalization, said he will resign following a string of reports about his connections to the Unification Church, sources said Oct. 24.

Yamagiwa, 54, will be the first Cabinet minister to step down since Prime Minister Fumio Kishida took office in October 2021.

Yamagiwa had remained vague about his connections to the church, which is now formally called the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification. But he later acknowledged the ties when evidence was presented to him.

Opposition parties have called on Kishida to replace Yamagiwa.
