Ukrainian residents in Japan and other protesters gathered in front of Tokyo’s Shibuya Station to call for an end to the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the six-month anniversary of the start of the war.

The Aug. 24 rally was about 100 participants strong and also coincided with the 31st anniversary of Ukraine’s independence from the former Soviet Union.

“Today is Ukraine’s Independence Day and marks six months since the conflict intensified,” said Tom Tanaka, 24, a member of Stand With Ukraine Japan, a nongovernmental organization that organized the rally. “Many things were lost, but not the hearts of Ukrainians.”

The NGO, which provides support to the war-torn country, called on people through social media to join the protest on Aug. 24.

“The war is not over yet and will likely continue for some time,” said Arata Yamaoka, 46, one of the protesters. “Japanese should offer more support to Ukrainian evacuees.”
