Tokyo reported 25,277 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus on Aug. 20, an increase of 1,504 over the previous Saturday, as well as 23 related deaths. The fatalities included a child under the age of 10.
For the week ending Aug. 20, the daily average of new COVID-19 cases in the capital came to 25,601.1, or 97.9 percent of the average of the previous week, metropolitan government officials said.
Thirty-six patients were diagnosed with symptoms serious enough to warrant the use of a ventilator or other equipment to breathe. The figure was an increase of two over the previous day.
Meanwhile, daily COVID-19 tally records were set the same day in Okayama and Tottori prefectures in western Japan.
