The Japan Meteorological Agency is warning of potential landslides and flooding in low-lying areas as Typhoon No. 8, nicknamed Meari, is expected to hit the Pacific side of eastern Japan on Aug. 13.
The JMA forecasts the Tokai region will be drenched with up to 150 millimeters of rain over the 24-hour period through 6 a.m. on Aug. 13 while the Kanto-Koshin region can expect 80 mm.
Over the next 24 hours, 200 to 300 mm of rain is expected to lash Tokai while 100 to 150 mm is in store for Kanto-Koshin, weather officials said.
The JMA said the tropical storm that formed south of the country’s main islands became a typhoon on the morning of Aug. 12.
Officials said Meari was moving slowly south of Japan as of 6 a.m. on Aug. 12, with a central pressure of 1,004 hectopascals, maximum sustained winds of 64.8 kph near the center and maximum instantaneous gusts of 90 kph.
Meteorologists are projecting top instantaneous wind speeds of 90 kph in the Kanto-Koshin and Tokai regions.
