Tokyo posted 31,541 fresh cases of COVID-19 on July 31, the highest number for a Sunday yet, along with eight related deaths.
The latest tally in the capital was up 3,429 from the previous Sunday, metropolitan health officials said.
Most of the fatalities involved patients in their 70s through 90s.
In the Kanto region, Saitama and Ibaraki prefectures reported 13,690 and 3,777 cases, respectively, their highest numbers to date.
Elsewhere, Shiga Prefecture reported a record 2,638 cases, while Kagawa Prefecture logged 1,365 cases, also a record.
