Tokyo again reported a doubling week-on-week of fresh COVID-19 cases as metropolitan government officials said there were 8,529 cases on July 7.
It was the second straight day the capital had more than 8,000 cases.
The figure for July 7 was an increase of 4,908 cases over the previous Thursday, marking the 20th straight day for a week-on-week increase.
The daily average of new cases for the week ending July 7 was 5,127.7, which was double the average of the previous week.
Despite the surge in COVID-19 cases across Japan in recent days, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Seiji Kihara said at his July 7 news conference that the government was not considering measures to limit the movement of people.
He said that was because no prefectural government had yet asked for pre-emergency measures to deal with the rapid increase in new cases.
