Satoru Noda’s “Golden Kamuy” adventure manga series published by Shueisha Inc. won the Grand Prize in the comic book category of the 51st Japan Cartoonists Association Awards.
Koji Chiriakuta’s “Teinei na Kurashi wo Suru Gaki” (A hungry ghost that lives a careful life), published by Kadokawa Corp., captured the top prize in the cartoon category.
The Manga Kingdom Tottori prize went to Taizan 5’s “Takopi's Original Sin,” also a Shueisha publication, while the Manga Kingdom Tosa prize went to Seigo Sakai’s “Wataru Seken wa Omoshiroi” (You’ll only find this world interesting), published by Minami Nippon Shimbun Kaihatsu Center.
The culture minister award went to Takao Saito, best known as creator of the “Golgo 13” series, and his company Saito Production for his achievement in the promotion of the “gekiga” dramatic pictures comic genre.
Saito died last year at age 84.
The winners will be given a plaque, a medal, an award certificate, and prize money.
The selection committee was headed by Machiko Satonaka. The awards were announced May 20.
Other members included Shoji Igo, Koji Tsujishita, Kamakiri Uno, Moto Hagio, Hiroshi Odagiri, Mitsuru Miura, Ikuya Komori and Joji Morikawa.
