SEOUL--South Korea announced the appointment of Yun Duk-min, a specialist in Japan-South Korea relations, as its next ambassador to Japan.

“I believe he will prioritize improving bilateral ties with Japan since that is the most important task for the ambassador at this moment,” said a source close to the presidential office.

Yun, who was born in 1959 and is fluent in Japanese, is regarded as an expert on foreign affairs, particularly Japan-South Korea relations. He headed the Korea National Diplomatic Academy from 2013 through 2017.

After studying in the United States, he earned a Ph.D. at Keio University in Tokyo.

Yun had been considered a favorite to become the next ambassador to Japan since he serves as a Japanese policy adviser to new South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, who has made it his mission to improve bilateral ties.

“To restore healthy relations between Japan and South Korea, we will keep close communication with the new South Korean administration while maintaining Japan’s consistent stance (on long-standing issues that have bedeviled relations between the two countries),” Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said at a news conference on June 7.
