Tokyo Metro Co. announced April 25 it will raise fares on all subway lines by 10 yen (7.8 cents) from around March 2023 to create barrier-free stations.

The increase will be the first in about 28 years, excluding the consumption tax hike.

Tokyo Metro will take advantage of a government program that allows it to add the cost of making its stations barrier-free to fares.

Commuter pass prices will go up by 370 yen for one-month passes, 1,050 to 1,060 yen for three-month passes, and 1,990 to 2,000 yen for six-month passes.

Student commuter passes will be exempted from the price hike.

East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) also plans to use the program to raise its regular fares for train services by 10 yen on major lines in the Tokyo metropolitan area starting in spring 2023.
