Prince Hisahito, second in line to the Chrysanthemum Throne, met his fellow classmates when he attended the entrance ceremony for the University of Tsukuba’s Senior High School in Tokyo on April 9.

He is the first member born to the imperial family in postwar Japan to enroll in a high school other than the one attached to Gakushuin University.

His parents, Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko, also attended the ceremony held at the school in Bunkyo Ward.

Wearing a navy blue suit, Hisahito, 15, said prior to the ceremony he was “so happy” to mark his enrollment in the school.

Referring to his hopes for high school life, he said, “While studying hard, I also want to deepen my knowledge of what I am interested in and enjoy school events.”

The prince graduated from Ochanomizu University Junior High School in the same ward in March.

He was admitted to the University of Tsukuba’s Senior High School through a special program that allows students selected from schools affiliated with the universities to go on to each other’s schools.

To be admitted to the University of Tsukuba’s Senior High School, students must do well in academic achievement tests of five subjects after receiving a recommendation from their junior high school and passing application screening.

After graduating from his junior high school, he visited his uncle and aunt, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, as well as his grandparents, Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko, to inform them of his graduation and enrollment.
