Tokyo reported 10,823 new COVID-19 cases on March 9, the first time in four days the daily count exceeded 10,000.

The latest tally was down 1,870 from a week ago, marking the sixth consecutive day for the figure to drop from the same day of the preceding week.

The seven-day average of new cases over the week through March 9 was 9,712.1, or 87.9 percent of the figure for the preceding week, when it was 11,045.

Tokyo officials also reported 28 deaths among patients in their 70s to 90s.

Of the 10,823 cases, 528 were judged to be infected with the virus without taking a test.

Children aged 9 or younger accounted for the largest age group among the patients with 2,292, followed by 1,880 in their 40s, 1,766 in their 30s, 1,552 in their 20s, and 1,519 between ages 10 and 19.

Cases among those who are 65 or older were 620.

The occupancy rate of hospital beds in Tokyo stood at 44.9 percent.

The occupancy rate of hospital beds for severe patients was 25.9 percent as of March 8. The Tokyo metropolitan government has stated that it will ask the central government to issue a state of emergency in the capital if this figure rises to between 30 to 40 percent.

The number of serious cases requiring ventilators or ECMO heart-lung bypass machines dropped by three from the previous day to 64.
